Here are 10 tips to help you boost your listening to others, in order to have healthier and more productive conversations.<\/p><ol><li><strong>Make the other person feel comfortable. <\/strong>It is essential to find an appropriate and relaxed context (space and time) from the beginning of the conversation.<\/li><li><strong>Show interest. <\/strong>It is simply a matter of concentrating on the other person, being attentive to what they are expressing both verbally and non-verbally.<\/li><li><strong>Eliminate distractions. <\/strong>As soon as our thoughts start to wander, we refocus on the conversation.<\/li><li><strong>Maintain eye contact. <\/strong>This contact should be frequent without being excessive.<\/li><li><strong>Ask questions. <\/strong>\u2018Open-ended\u2019 questions (starting with \u2018what\u2019, \u2018how\u2019, \u2018which\u2019, etc.) help to foster communication and listening with the other person, while \u2018closed\u2019 questions seek a concise answer, usually of the \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 type.<\/li><li><strong>Let people talk, do not interrupt. <\/strong>It is important to create a space for conversation in which the other person feels comfortable.<\/li><li><strong>Use the silences. <\/strong>If we wait before responding, our interlocutor will often continue talking and provide us with more information that we may find useful or interesting.<\/li><li><strong>Show understanding, avoid prejudice. <\/strong>Even if we disagree with the other person, it is important that we listen to their arguments and take the opportunity to ask clarifying questions.<\/li><li><strong>Do not become irritable or lose patience. <\/strong>Avoid gestures of nervousness or impatience with hands or feet.<\/li><li><strong>Rephrase or summarise.
